Qué es un servidor privado virtual, cómo funciona, ejemplos reales, diferencias con un hosting y cuándo vale la pena alquilar uno.

What is a VPS and what is it really used for?

A website needs a computer to run on. But buying an entire physical server for a small application is often overkill. A VPS is a virtual private server: an environment that behaves like your own server, even though it shares hardware with others.

It’s not a toy server. Nor does it mean you have a physical machine reserved just for you. The key word is virtual.

The explanation I wish I’d heard at the beginning

Imagine a building with several apartments. Each apartment has its own keys, kitchen, and rooms. However, they all share the building’s structure and certain facilities.

A VPS is similar: a powerful machine hosts several isolated environments. In one, there might be a web app built with Django; in another, an online store; and in another, a database. What a neighbor does shouldn’t give them access to your files, even if they share physical resources.

What happens inside?

The provider uses virtualization technology to allocate processing capacity, memory, storage, and network connectivity. Depending on the case, each environment can be a virtual machine with its own kernel or a container that shares the host’s kernel. Both can offer a similar administrative experience, but technically they are not the same.

Normally, you receive an IP address or access method, a Linux system, users, and permissions. You can install a web server, a database, applications, or automation tools.

When someone opens your domain, the request arrives via the internet, passes through the necessary network components, and ends in the program responding inside the VPS.

What is a VPS used for? Three real examples

A portfolio or business website. You can run an application that needs more than just uploading HTML files. For example, a backend that queries a database to display products.

A chatbot or automation. Tools like n8n or processes that wait for events can stay running even when your personal computer is off.

A development environment. You can test a version of your project with a system similar to production, without mixing it with your PC or other clients.

VPS, shared hosting, and dedicated: they are not the same

In shared hosting, the provider usually manages much of the environment: it’s simple, though with less control. In a VPS, you have a more independent environment and can install many of your own services. In a dedicated server, the entire physical machine is assigned to a single client.

This doesn’t mean a VPS is always better. For a simple page, managed hosting might save you work. For very demanding operations, you might need reserved resources and a larger architecture.

Does a VPS need maintenance?

Yes. Having permission to install whatever you want also means responsibility. You must update software, limit open ports, maintain backups, monitor usage, and protect credentials. A VPS with a weak password doesn’t become secure just because it’s in the cloud.

It’s also wise to check what resources you’re actually contracting. Two plans advertised with 4 vCPU may perform differently if they use different processors or suffer from shared loads. RAM, disk, and latency also matter.

How does it fit into ArduMaker?

ArduMaker allows you to create and manage VPS environments and add applications such as databases or Git deployments from a panel. The practical idea is to avoid part of the repetitive configuration work, while maintaining a server environment for your projects.

The idea to take away: a VPS is not a website or a domain: it is the place where you can run programs and decide how your server behaves. Before renting one, ask yourself what your project needs and how much maintenance you are willing to assume.
