What is Railway and what type of projects is it suitable for?

Railway is a deployment platform that allows you to run applications and connect services without manually preparing an entire server. It usually appears when someone wants to go from "my project works on localhost" to "other people can already use it".

It makes sense: writing the code is one part of the job. The other consists of publishing it, configuring variables, connecting a database, and keeping it available.

What problem does Railway try to solve?

Imagine an application made up of three pieces: a frontend, an API, and PostgreSQL. On your computer, maybe everything works with different commands and ports. But to publish it, you need to decide where each service runs, how they communicate, and what happens when it restarts.

Railway organizes those components as services within projects and facilitates several build and deployment steps.

It is not magic nor a free computer that works without limits. It is a platform that manages resources and infrastructure with its own usage and billing model.

How is an application published?

A frequent flow starts by linking a Git repository. Railway detects or receives instructions on how to build the software, prepares the environment, and executes the corresponding process.

If an application needs an API key or a database address, you can configure it via environment variables, avoiding writing it directly inside the code.

After that, you need to decide which service should be public. An API may need a domain; a database used internally, on the other hand, may need to remain accessible only via a private network.

What does connecting services mean?

Suppose you have a Django backend. It needs to run queries on PostgreSQL.

You can separate the backend and the database into services, configure the credentials, and connect both. This makes it easier to organize responsibilities, but it does not eliminate schema migrations, security, or backups.

In a real application, moreover, it is advisable to distinguish web processes from background tasks. If something takes several minutes to generate a report, it may need to run outside the HTTP request.

Does Railway work for frontend and backend?

It can host different types of services, including backends and web applications, always within the models compatible with the platform. Some static websites can also be deployed, but it is advisable to compare their needs with specialized alternatives.

The important thing is to understand that a compiled page and an API that runs processes continuously do not consume the same resources.

Before choosing any provider, check the execution model, memory limits, storage, ports, consumption, and current price.

Railway versus a VPS

On a VPS you get a server environment. You can install tools, create users, modify services, and manage processes. That gives you flexibility, but also maintenance work.

Railway abstracts several of those tasks and lets you work with application services. It's practical if your project follows a supported model and you don't want to manage every layer of the system.

It makes no sense to say that one is "more professional." A small product can benefit from a managed platform; software with special needs may require a VPS or different infrastructure.

Three mistakes worth avoiding

Assuming that every local file is permanent. A deployment or restart can replace the environment; check the guarantees and persistent storage options.

Storing keys inside Git. Use variables and secure mechanisms. A repository being private doesn't mean you should include all passwords.

Not knowing how billing works. A project that seems small can keep processes running, store data, or consume network. Measure usage and set up alerts when available.

What happens if the deployment fails?

First check the logs: a variable may be missing, the startup command may be incorrect, the application may be listening on another port, or a dependency may fail to install.

«It worked on my computer» is not a sufficient explanation. The production environment may use different variables, paths, and versions.

And in ArduMaker?

In ArduMaker you can also deploy Git repositories and manage applications within VPS. The main difference is the level of access and control of the environment where those processes run. Each option has advantages depending on who maintains the infrastructure.

In one sentence: Railway seeks to simplify the step from repository to a working application. Choosing it well implies reviewing what you run, what persists, and what responsibilities remain yours.
