Lightsail is the simple way into AWS: VMs at a monthly price, with databases, containers and DNS sold separately. ArduMaker is a root VPS that already brings an apps panel, email and MCP.

Quick summary

ArduMaker

  • Who it is for: Developers, freelancers and agencies who want the server and the tools to run it together, without assembling every piece.
  • Biggest strength: GitHub deploys, n8n, WordPress, databases, email on your domain and weekly backups already built into the same VPS.

AWS Lightsail

  • Who it is for: Anyone who wants an AWS virtual machine at a predictable price, or already works inside an AWS account.
  • Biggest strength: A full virtual machine with AWS infrastructure behind it: 15 regions, an API, IAM and managed products to add when needed.

The main difference: Lightsail gives you the machine and the rest is added product by product or configured by hand; ArduMaker gives you the machine with the panel and everyday services already handled.

Key differences

Virtual machine vs system container

A Lightsail instance is a virtual machine: you choose the system (several Linux distributions or Windows) and control the kernel. The ArduMaker VPS is Ubuntu 22.04 in an isolated system container with root: it runs Docker, services and databases without trouble, but it is not the right fit if you need another operating system or your own kernel modules.

An empty server vs a server with a panel

Lightsail delivers the machine (or an image with an app installed) and the AWS console for infrastructure; deploying your apps, nginx, certificates and services are up to you. On ArduMaker the panel links GitHub repos, publishes domains with SSL, installs PostgreSQL, Redis or n8n and creates systemd services, and an agent can do all of it over MCP too.

AWS pieces you add on

Lightsail's advantage is that it lives inside AWS: IAM for permissions, the API and CLI for automation, and managed products (highly available databases, load balancers, containers) you add as needed, each with its own price. ArduMaker has no cross-zone high availability or autoscaling: everything lives on one VPS and you grow by changing plans.

WordPress from a blueprint or native WordPress

Lightsail creates an instance with WordPress already installed; in 2026 the Bitnami-packaged blueprints are being retired in favor of Lightsail-packaged ones, and maintenance is still yours. ArduMaker treats WordPress as a native site, with PHP-FPM and MySQL, staging, backups and migration from another host.

Email on your domain

Lightsail does not include mailboxes: you either run a mail server on the instance or sign up for another service. ArduMaker includes mailboxes on your domain, webmail, IMAP/SMTP and guided DNS (SPF, DKIM, DMARC) in the same panel.

Pricing and costs

Lightsail charges a monthly price per instance, billed hourly, that includes a transfer allowance; the 0.5 GB one costs $5 with IPv4 and the IPv6-only one $3.50. Snapshots ($0.05 per GB per month), managed databases (from $15 a month, $30 with high availability), the container service (from $7) and load balancers are paid separately. AWS's own example of a container, a database and a load balancer adds up to $40 a month. On ArduMaker the VPS plan includes the panel, weekly backups and whatever databases you install on it; compare list prices at the same amount of RAM.

Assumptions: AWS Lightsail prices checked on 2026-10-17 on aws.amazon.com/lightsail/pricing and its docs, in US dollars, excluding taxes and for US regions (some prices vary by region). Compared with ArduMaker's entry plan at list price.

Real-world scenarios

A client's WordPress site

On ArduMaker: You create the native site from the panel, with staging, backups and SSL; if it comes from another host, it is migrated from there.

On AWS Lightsail: You launch the WordPress blueprint, point the domain and take care of updating plugins, PHP and the system.

API with PostgreSQL

On ArduMaker: You link the repo, ArduMaker proposes build and start, and PostgreSQL lives on the same VPS.

On AWS Lightsail: You install the runtime and nginx on the instance or use the container service, and add a managed database from $15/month.

Project that already lives on AWS

On ArduMaker: It works just as well, but sits outside the AWS account: separate permissions and billing.

On AWS Lightsail: A better fit: it uses IAM, billing and tooling from the same account, and can grow into other AWS services.

n8n with workers for automations

On ArduMaker: One-click install with queue-mode workers, its own PostgreSQL and Redis, published with HTTPS.

On AWS Lightsail: You install Docker and n8n by hand on the instance, or run it on the container service, and set up database, queue and certificate.

An AI agent that operates the server

On ArduMaker: ArduMaker's MCP server lets the agent deploy, read logs and create databases, services and domains inside the VPS, with human approval.

On AWS Lightsail: With the AWS MCP Server the agent handles infrastructure (creating instances, snapshots, DNS); what happens inside the server still goes through SSH.

When AWS Lightsail is the better fit

  • A full virtual machine: you choose the operating system, even Windows, and control the kernel.
  • AWS infrastructure and network, with 15 regions to choose from.
  • API, CLI, SDKs and IAM to automate and control access with standard AWS tooling.
  • Highly available managed databases and load balancers when the project needs them.
  • A natural path into the rest of AWS if the project grows.

When ArduMaker is the better fit

  • The panel is already there: GitHub deploys, domains with SSL, services and databases without manual setup.
  • Weekly backups included, with no per-GB snapshot charge.
  • Email on your domain and native WordPress on the same platform.
  • One-click n8n with workers, PostgreSQL and Redis.
  • An AI agent over MCP works inside the server, not just on the infrastructure.

How to migrate from AWS Lightsail to ArduMaker

Moving from a Lightsail instance to ArduMaker means moving one Linux server to another: apps, databases, files, jobs and DNS. It is best done with a Lightsail snapshot as a safety net.

  1. Take a snapshot: Before touching anything, create a manual snapshot of the instance in Lightsail. It is your way back if something goes wrong.
  2. Take inventory: Note which blueprint you used, which apps and services run, their ports, cron jobs, environment variables and where the data lives.
  3. Prepare the VPS: Install from the panel what the instance had set up by hand: PostgreSQL, MySQL, Redis or Docker.
  4. Move the databases: Dump each database with mysqldump or pg_dump, whether it lives on the instance or in a Lightsail managed database, and restore it on the VPS.
  5. Copy files: Upload app and user files with rsync or scp over SSH.
  6. Deploy the apps: Apps on GitHub are linked to the VPS and deploy on every push. WordPress sites can use ArduMaker's migration from another host.
  7. Scheduled jobs: Each crontab line becomes a scheduled task on the VPS or a timer in the deploy configuration.
  8. DNS and SSL: If you use a Lightsail DNS zone, change the A records that pointed to the instance IP or move the zone to ArduMaker. The certificate is issued when each domain is activated.
  9. Verify and close: Test on a subdomain, check logs and, once everything responds, delete the Lightsail instance while keeping the snapshot for a few weeks.

Frequently asked questions

Is Lightsail the same as EC2?

No. Lightsail is the simplified side of AWS: monthly plans with CPU, memory, disk and transfer included, and a simpler console. EC2 offers many more instance types and options such as autoscaling, priced per component. AWS's own guide recommends Lightsail for simple projects.

How much does Lightsail really cost?

The smallest Linux instance with IPv4 costs $5 a month. On top of that come snapshots ($0.05 per GB per month), managed databases (from $15), the container service (from $7) and load balancers if you use them, plus transfer beyond the plan's allowance.

What is happening to Bitnami blueprints on Lightsail?

AWS is retiring them: since May 19, 2026 they get no new versions, and on November 19, 2026 the Bitnami-packaged WordPress, LAMP, Nginx and Node.js blueprints are deprecated. Lightsail-packaged blueprints cover those cases.

Can an AI agent manage Lightsail?

Yes, with the AWS MCP Server, which can call any AWS API using your IAM permissions. It covers infrastructure (instances, snapshots, DNS); for what runs inside the server the agent needs SSH. ArduMaker's MCP also works inside the VPS: deploys, services, databases, domains and email.

Is the ArduMaker VPS a virtual machine like Lightsail?

No. It is Ubuntu 22.04 in an isolated system container, with root, running Docker and systemd services. It does not let you change the kernel or install another operating system; if you need that, a virtual machine such as Lightsail is the option.
