Qué hace Vercel, cómo publica aplicaciones desde Git, qué son los previews y cuándo resulta mejor usar un VPS.

What is Vercel and what type of project is it suitable for?

Before, publishing a website could mean setting up a server, configuring Nginx, installing certificates, and copying files manually. Today, many applications are published by connecting a repository and clicking a button. Vercel is a platform for developing, deploying, and hosting web applications, with tools that automate much of that process.

The point isn’t that servers have disappeared. It’s that someone else manages them for you.

What is Vercel for?

Imagine you’re building the page for a store using Next.js. While you work, the changes live on your computer. When you want someone else to test it, you need to publish it somewhere accessible from the Internet.

Vercel lets you connect projects from GitHub, GitLab, and other compatible providers. When you push changes, it can build a new version and generate a link to review it. If you merge changes into the branch configured for production, it can update the site that visitors use.

Instead of copying files each time, the platform follows a reproducible process.

What happens when you deploy?

A common example works like this:

  1. You connect the Git repository to a Vercel project.
  2. You set the environment variables and necessary configuration.
  3. Vercel fetches the code and runs the corresponding build.
  4. If everything goes well, it creates a deployment accessible via a URL.
  5. You can review a preview version or publish to production.

A preview deployment is a version for testing before affecting real users. It’s very useful when multiple people review a website: the designer can see the change without installing the project, and the developer can fix it before publishing.

What kinds of projects fit well?

Websites and applications with modern frameworks. It’s especially known for its integration with Next.js, although it supports many other projects.

Landing pages and content sites. When the main flow consists of building and serving a website, the experience is usually straightforward.

Teams that need previews. Being able to share a URL per branch or change avoids the typical phrase: “it works on my computer.”

It also offers functions and other services for server-side logic. This doesn’t mean any backend architecture runs exactly the same as on a traditional Linux machine.

How does it differ from a VPS?

On a VPS, you manage a server environment with different control: you choose processes, system configurations, services, and tools. On a platform like Vercel, many operational decisions are already resolved, and you work within its deployment models.

For a website that fits those models, this convenience can be a huge advantage. For very specific persistent processes, incompatible system software, or particular operational needs, another type of hosting may be preferable.

It also doesn’t make sense to choose based solely on the first price you see. You need to review traffic, build, execution, and service requirements, as well as the current conditions of each plan.

What problems doesn’t it solve on its own?

Vercel doesn’t write a well-designed application for you, doesn’t eliminate code errors, and doesn’t replace the security of your APIs and databases. If you publish a credential or use an insecure configuration, the automatic deployment won’t fix it.

And ArduMaker?

In ArduMaker, projects can also be deployed from Git repositories, but the approach allows managing applications within VPS environments. They are not identical experiences: one prioritizes certain platform abstractions, while the other offers control over the server. Choose the one that fits your project.

In summary: Vercel simplifies building, testing, and publishing web applications. Its greatest value lies in removing operational work when your application fits the model it offers.
