What is Kali Linux and when is it advisable to use it?

Qué es Kali Linux, para qué sirven sus herramientas de auditoría y cuándo no conviene usarlo como sistema de uso diario.

What is Kali Linux and when is it advisable to use it?

Kali Linux appears in videos full of terminals, green letters, and people typing at a suspicious speed. It seems that just by installing it you become a hacker. But no: Kali Linux is a Linux distribution specialized in security testing and system analysis.

It is not a magical operating system. It is, above all, a toolbox prepared for a specific job.

What does Kali Linux include?

It is based on Debian and brings together numerous tools used in security audits, network analysis, forensic research, and vulnerability assessment. It also incorporates configurations designed for those uses.

Imagine the difference between a household toolbox and a professional technician's equipment. Having better instruments allows you to do more specific jobs, but it does not automatically teach you when or how to use them.

The same happens with Kali. The tool matters less than understanding the technology you are reviewing.

What does someone who works in cybersecurity use it for?

Reviewing an own or authorized network. For example, checking which services are accessible and if there are machines with configurations that should not have been published.

Checking the security of an application. A team can evaluate if their systems are prepared against known failures, always within an agreed scope.

Investigate incidents. Some tools help examine files, traffic, or technical evidence after a problem occurs.

Practice in a lab. A student can install Kali on a virtual machine and work with test systems designed for learning.

In all these cases, what matters is not attacking for the sake of attacking. It is understanding the risk, verifying it carefully, and documenting how to reduce it.

Is it illegal to use Kali Linux?

Installing Kali Linux is not a crime. What can be illegal is performing certain actions on third-party systems without authorization.

A professional audit establishes which systems can be evaluated, which tests are allowed, when they are performed, and how results will be communicated. It is not enough that an IP is visible from the Internet to assume you have permission to test it.

Is it worth installing Kali as your everyday operating system?

For someone just starting with Linux, usually not. Ubuntu or Debian are often more comfortable options for studying the fundamentals, working, and using common applications.

Kali's own documentation warns that the distribution is especially geared toward security professionals and is not the general recommendation for someone looking for a daily desktop.

That does not mean it is impossible to use it for other things; it is simply not its main purpose.

How to get started without complicating things or putting anyone at risk?

First learn networking concepts, IP addresses, ports, processes, and permissions. Then you can install a lab virtual machine and practice with systems you control. Try observation tools and understand what their results mean.

Do not confuse detecting an open service with having found a vulnerability. A visible door is not automatically a defective lock.

What does this have to do with ArduMaker?

If you manage applications and VPS from ArduMaker, the same principles apply to reviewing your own configurations: limit exposed services, update programs, control permissions, and document changes. You don't need to install Kali in production to adopt good defensive practices.

To remember: Kali is a specialized environment for learning and working in information security. True skill is not in having a hundred tools, but in knowing what you are evaluating, why, and with what authorization.
